PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

December, 2011

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Without fail, we hear about how the world is changing – how our work is changing.  And while change may be uncomfortable, it is uncertainty we must make peace with.

Our donors face the same kinds of struggles in their work and personal lives.  As we enter this season of heightened gratitude, we have an opportunity to give our donors the gift of confidence and clarity.   Going beyond the standard thank you letter to better steward donor generosity offers a respite from uncertainty.

Pick up the phone to extend a personal thank you.  Send an additional hand-written note that acknowledges the importance of their contribution.  Share a story via an email or a note from someone who has benefitted from their thoughtfulness.  Stop by for a visit to simply say thank you.  Connect with your donors in a meaningful way.

And in the months ahead, intentionally grow your stewardship efforts and build donor confidence in your mission.  Give them a reason to feel certain their investment in your organization is a wise decision.  In a time of uncertainty, thoughtful relationship building will distinguish your organization.

On a personal note, I want to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve you as President of AFP Chicago this year.  It has been a rewarding and humbling experience.  I want to acknowledge the members of the board and extend my deepest gratitude for their commitment to the new strategic plan and a new way of working.  And I want to thank our talented staff - Pam Williams, Gail Brooks, Maria Vickers, and Christine Teed – for their unselfish and always creative support.

May the holiday season be peaceful, joyful and healthy for all of you and yours.

Happy New Year!

Michelle Sherbun, PCC, EL-MPI
