CAN’T-MISS EVENTS

February 8 - AFP Chicago Webinar: “Briefing the Solicitor Team”
Successful major gift fundraising is 90% preparation and 10% ask…and perhaps no part of the preparation is more important than briefing your solicitation team.

Join Travis W. Carley, Vice President, CCS and Joanna Evans, Manager of Major and Individual Gifts, Adler Planetarium, as they review the tools that will prepare your team for success, including how to present this information to your solicitors in a way that inspires confidence and provides the greatest chance of securing your organization’s next major gift.  Key learning objectives include:

  • Discuss the importance of briefing your solicitation team and the most important elements to include
  • Review tools and techniques that will best prepare your team for their next ask
  • Discuss challenges and strategies to address them

The webinar is Wednesday, February 8 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Click here to learn more and register by check.  To register online click here.

Special thanks to our 2011 Webinar sponsor Copley Raff, Inc.!

February 29 - Save the Date!  Government Relations Breakfast Program “Putting the Budget Crisis in Perspective:  Nonprofit Organizations Financial Implications for Your Organization”

On February 29, the Government Relations Committee will host a special breakfast program at Maggiano’s Banquets to examine Illinois’ fiscal condition, the structural issues that have contributed to the fiscal problems for nonprofits and future financial implications for your organization.   The presentation provides fact-based insight into Federal and State Social and Human Service, Education and Health Program budget cuts.

This program was developed for individuals charged with meeting and increasing the overall cash flow for an organization, including Executive Directors, Finance Directors, Chief Development Officers, Fund Development Professionals and nonprofit leaders.

Please plan to join us and hear from Ralph Martire, Executive Director, Center for Tax and Budget Accountability.  Martire was recently appointed by Lt. Governor Sheila Simon as a technical advisor on matters involving tax, budget, and education funding reform.  In February 2011, he was appointed to serve on the U.S. Department of Education Equity and Excellence Commission.  Founded in 2000, the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability is a bi-partisan 501c3 research and advocacy think tank that promotes fair, efficient and progressive tax, spending and economic policies.

NEWS/UPDATES

AFP Chicago Features 2012 Philanthropy Awards Luncheon Honorees

On May 11th, AFP Chicago will honor eight of the most distinguished leaders of the city's philanthropic and nonprofit sectors at the 36th annual Philanthropy Awards Luncheon.  Over the next several months, AFP Chicago will feature the event's honorees here, in eDevelopments, as a way of showcasing their accomplishments.  In this edition, we put the spotlight on Rick Waddell (Executive Leader Award), Bernarda Wong (Outstanding Community Leader Award), and Elizabeth Luxem (Outstanding Volunteer Award).

Rick Waddell (Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Northern Trust Company)

Frederick (Rick) Waddell has held leadership positions with Northern Trust since 1975, including his current roles as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.  His leadership extends to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations in the Chicago area.  For 15 years he has been a member of the Kohl Children’s Museum Board of Directors (10 years as Chair), presiding over the Museum’s $23 million capital campaign and its efforts to launch its endowment, among other achievements.  Rick exemplifies generosity as a Director or Trustee with over a dozen organizations, contributing considerable time and resources to such institutions as the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, Northwestern University, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the Chicago Urban League.  AFP Chicago is proud to present Rick Waddell with the 2012 Executive Leader Award.

Bernarda Wong (President, Chinese American Service League)

Since 1978, Bernarda (Bernie) Wong has served as the head of the Chinese American Service League (CASL), the largest and most comprehensive social service agency in the Midwest dedicated to the needs of Chinese Americans.  CASL’s first employee, Bernie grew the organization from an annual budget of $30,000 to over $12 million today, which includes 280 staff members and serves 17,000 clients annually.  She has been named Crain’s Chicago “100 Most Influential Women of Chicago”, Today’s Chicago Woman “100 Women Making a Difference”, and one of the “100 Most Influential Women of Chicago” by the Chicago Sun-Times.  Bernie has served on dozens of nonprofit boards and government committees as a local and nationwide leader of the Asian community.  AFP Chicago congratulates Bernie for being selected as the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Community Leader Award.

Elizabeth Luxem (Amandla Charter School)

AFP Chicago is pleased to present Elizabeth (Liz) Luxem with this year’s Outstanding Volunteer Award.  Liz has given countless hours of service in leading the design and development of an 8,000-volume library for Amandla Charter School in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood.  In addition to traveling an hour and a half to serve Amandla, Liz manages various other volunteer positions.  Assisting families during times of need and crisis, she serves as a Eucharistic Minister, Minister of Care, and Bereavement Minister at St. Raymond in Mt. Prospect, and as a Eucharistic Minister at Northwest Community Hospital.  In addition, as Chair of Regina Dominican High School’s Board of Directors, Liz led Vision 2020, the school’s recent planning process, through which Regina crafted its new vision for teaching and learning, research, technology, and alumnae involvement, among other strategic areas.

Sponsorships are currently available for the Philanthropy Awards Luncheon.  Please visit the AFP Chicago website for more information, and save Friday, May 11th on your calendar.  Click here to view information on all 2012 honorees. Invitations for the Awards Luncheon will be mailed in March.

Peer Mentoring Committee Thanks Applicants for Participating in the Peer Mentoring Spring Class!

Many members accepted the invitation to apply to participate in the Peer Mentoring program for the Spring class, as either a mentor or protégé. Your AFP Chicago Board, and the Peer Mentoring Committee, appreciates your participation. Matches for the Spring class are now being determined, with a kickoff event to occur in early March.

Surveys of completed mentor matches from 2011 indicate the program is filling a need and is rewarding for both protégés and mentors. All respondents to the surveys rated “effectiveness in meeting agreed upon goals in a one-year time frame” at either an excellent or above-average experience.

AFP Chicago appreciates the sponsorship of this program from the School of Business and Nonprofit Management at North Park University.
