New Peer Mentoring Protégé Curriculum for 2025

Jennifer DettloffBy Jennifer Dettloff, Director, Alumni and Volunteer Engagement, UChicago Medicine & Biological Sciences Development | Co-Chair, AFP Chicago Peer Mentoring Committee

The Peer Mentoring Program is one of the most important and valuable benefits of membership in AFP Chicago. While the primary focus of the Program remains the relationship between the protégé and mentor, the Peer Mentoring Committee is excited to announce the launch of our new curriculum for participating protégés: Careers in Philanthropy Discussions. As the successor to our Quarterly Discussion Groups, which have proven to be an effective platform for conversation and learning, the protégé curriculum will leverage the expertise and experience of our mentor community. Our new curriculum will focus on the needs most frequently highlighted by our protégé applicants: diversifying their development skills, charting their career path, and building their professional network.

Curriculum Structure

The Careers in Philanthropy Discussions will take place four times a year. Two sessions will be held annually: individual giving and skills for career advancement. Sessions on other career paths including institutional giving, prospect management & analytics, development operations, and alumni & volunteer engagement will be held in alternating years. We will also continue offering our popular Office Hours sessions, where protégés can engage in small-group conversation with an experienced development professional. Careers in Philanthropy Discussions and Office Hours are optional and serve as valuable complements to protégés’ monthly one-to-one meetings with their mentors.

Exclusively for Current Protégés

Careers in Philanthropy Discussions and Office Hours are exclusively available to current protégés in the Peer Mentoring Program. The Peer Mentoring Committee will invite current mentors to help lead and facilitate these programs; more information will be available in January for mentors to join a discussion about the new curriculum and ways to get involved in one or more of the 2025 programs.
